In the event of a divorce, each parent is responsible to pay child support to support the child when the marriage ends.
The following factors are considered to calculate child support:
- Each parent's gross income
- The number of children that the parents have together
- How much time each parent spends with each child
- Mandatory payroll deductions, including health insurance and pensions
- Each parent's contribution to child care costs
- Any children from a previous marriage
- The income of a new spouse if either of the parents have remarried
When the court figures out the proper amount, the judge will determine which parent is responsible for making monthly payments. If a noncustodial parent wishes to modify the child support order, he/she must experience a “significant material change in circumstances,” such as the paying parent losing his/her job. If the financial loss is substantial, the court can modify the court order to what the parent can afford until he/she obtains employment.
