Changes to San Francisco Parental Leave Law Give Parents Get More Time & Money

When you have a child, you will naturally need to take some time off from work to recover and spend time with your new baby. Unfortunately, most states and cities in this country do not require or encourage companies to provide their employees with benefits or parental leave. Recently, changes were made to San Francisco parental law which gives parents more time and financial benefits after having a child.

San Francisco Passes Other States in Paid Parental Leave

In California, workers currently are entitled to receive 55% of their wages for a period of six weeks. This law applies to both mother and fathers who have a baby together, as well as same-sex couples who have adopted, fostered, or had a baby together by other means.

San Francisco has recently made incredible strides, putting the city at the top of this country's ranks in parental leave law. This new law approved by the Board of Supervisors would allow most new parents who are employed to receive additional benefits. Employers in San Francisco will be required to pay employees the balance (45%) of their salary during the period of parental leave.

Encouraging New Parents to Bond With Their Children

The intention of the law is to encourage bonding between parents and children, expanding their period of parental leave. It has been proven in the past that many new parents do not take leave from work after having a child because they cannot afford to. The economic impact this has on parents is significant, allowing them to spend the six weeks of parental leave with their new child and not worry about the severe loss of income.

The new law applies to all businesses and non-profit organizations that have at least 50 employees. On July 1, this will be expanded to businesses with 35 or more workers. On Jan 1, 2018, businesses with 20 or more employees will be included in a further expansion of the law.
