Believe it or not, family homes aren’t the only places in which
domestic violence occurs. Recent studies are showing that today there are more and more
high school relationships that have violent boyfriends. It is important
to note that domestic violence can come from either a male or female,
this article is merely addressing a specific issue as reported by the
News Observer about abusive teenage relationships. According to their
article, there is a growing concern specifically with high school relationships
and females who are being violently beaten up by their boyfriends.
According to Rita Kaur, the director of training and education for the
InterAct group, states that 1 in every 10 girls in a high school relationship
fall victim to domestic violence at least once. The InterAct group is
an organization that helps victims of domestic violence by way of offering
shelter and helpful information for them to move forward. The aforementioned
statistic is specifically for girls who have been physically hit by their
boyfriends, the number increases significantly when counting those who
are victims of emotional and psychological abuse.
The InterAct group recently sponsored a walk for awareness in Raleigh,
North Carolina to raise awareness about domestic violence in their community.
This walk was in light of the deaths of six different women in Wake County
who were killed by their husbands or boyfriend between now and May of
this year. Domestic violence is a tragic truth that is plaguing our very
world, and those who are victims often feel as though their lovers will
change eventually, or they fear speaking up.
